2018 Black Hills Plein Air Paint-Out

The Black Hills Plein Air Paint-Out gathers artists in the Black Hills of South Dakota to paint the beautiful Black Hills on the last weekend of September.

This particular weekend in the Black Hills is packed with visitors from around the state and region for
Custer State Park’s famous annual buffalo round-up.

This area offers intimate scenes of Black Hills granite, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy
Horse Memorial, prairie, meadows, aspens, lakes, streams, wildlife, the Mickelson Trail, and history.

The Black Hills Plein Air Paint-Out is organized by the Artists of the Black Hills and the Hill City Arts Council.

Artists of the Black Hills is an area organization of professional artists, artisans, and galleries with a common goal of establishing
the Black Hills region as a prime source for art of the highest quality. ABH works with regional arts organizations and
commercial entities to foster greater growth and appreciation of the Black Hills as an art center.

Hill City Arts Council envisions the community of Hill City as a community embracing the arts. Its mission is to nurture and
support the arts and humanities as well as helping to boost the creative economy by offering arts and music events to show
their motto is “Small Town, Big Art!”

GUIDELINES

1. This event is open to 35 artists.

2. Painting dates: Tuesday, September 25 – Saturday, September 29, 2018

3. All paintings must be painted “en plein air” in the Black Hills of South Dakota and completed during the dates of the event.
Paintings completed prior to this event are not permitted.

4. Entry fee: $60 if postmarked by Sept. 1, 2018 ($75 fee after Sept. 1). Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
5. The roster of participating artists will be filled in the order that registration forms and fees are received.

6. Entrance to Custer State Park requires a park entrance fee. A temporary 7-day pass is $20 per vehicle, obtained at any of the
park entrances. A park entrance fee is not required the day of the Buffalo Roundup.

6. Blank canvas panels/ papers must be stamped at sign-in. The canvas/papers must be blank but may be tinted. The stamp
must be visible on the backs of the finished painting when framed.

7. Canvases/papers must be free of images prior to stamping…no false fronts, no digital prints to be painted over. No paintings
from photographs, no entries produced using manipulated photographic processes, computer enhanced imagery, or other non-plein
air methods will be permitted.

8. All paintings must be properly framed and fitted with wire hangers. No sawtooth hangers allowed.

9. Paintings completed during the event will be offered for sale to the general public beginning Thursday, Sept. 27, at 12pm
until Saturday at 4pm at the Hill City Senior Center at 227 Walnut Avenue, Hill City, SD. The Hills City Senior Center is across the
highway from the 1880 Train property. Artists are encouraged to begin hanging their paintings at the Senior Center beginning at
noon on Thursday.

10. Artists receive 70% of the selling price of their paintings that sell. The Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out receives 30%. Checks to
artists will be mailed within one month of the closing of the event.

11. Sales are handled by the BHPAPO cashiers at the sales venue and not the artist. If a buyer purchases artwork off the easel at
the time of painting, the artist must notify BHPAPO of the transaction and give said payment to the BHPAPO cashier for proper
accounting and disbursement. Artwork sold off the easel is not eligible for award consideration

12. Paintings considered for awards need to remain at the Senior Center for judging later Friday afternoon, Sept. 28.

ARTISTS’ AWARDS

BEST OF SHOW $500
PEOPLE’S CHOICE $100
BEST NOCTURNE $100
BEST QUICK DRAW $100

A. The People’s Choice award is given to the painting receiving the highest vote tally. The awards for Best of Show,
Best Nocturne, and Best Quick Draw will be chosen by jurors.

B. Nocturnes will hang on a separate panel for the juror’s consideration.

C. To be considered for awards, paintings need to be turned in at the Senior Center by 1 pm, Friday, Sept. 28. Artists
can continue to paint. Any paintings finished after that time can be hung Saturday morning for any possible Saturday
sales and are not eligible for awards.

D. Ballots for the People’s Choice award will be distributed among people attending the Artists’ Reception on Friday
evening beginning at 5pm. Balloting will end at 5:45pm. Awards for those honors will be presented at 6pm. The
Artists’ Reception is Friday from 5pm to 7:30pm.

SCHEDULE

Tues. Sept. 25: Artist’s Check-in at insideOut Gallery from 8am to 5pm

1. Registered artists’ check-in and panel stamping at insideOut Gallery at 150 Poplar Street, Hill City. insideOut is
located near the south end of the 1880 Train property by a stop on the MickelsonTrail.

2. Blank panels and surfaces must be stamped. Panels and papers may be tinted.

3. Receive your artist’s registration packet and ditty bags containing information, name tag, painting price tags, and
suggested sites to paint.

4. A free painting day in the Black Hills.

5. All artwork completed needs to kept in the possession of each artist until noon on Thursday.

6. ARTISTS’ MEET AND GREET at Inside Out Gallery from 5 – 7pm.

Wed. Sept. 26: Artists paint together at Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park

1. Artists check-in and registration continues at insideOut Gallery.

2. At 8am meet at Sylvan Lake to paint in this iconic area of the Black Hills.

3. Sylvan Lake is in Custer State Park, requiring a park entrance fee.

4. Artwork remains in artists’ possession until Thursday noon.

5. Artists are on their own for the evening meal.

6. Painting is Custer State Park is usually problem-free. However, a few cautions!

A. The wild burros love open car windows for free snacks. Painting near them could be a challenge. Your
vehicle is your safest refuge.
B. The Buffalo are not to be trifled with. Painting near any buffalo is best done within the safety of your
vehicle. They are dangerous, period.
C. The Needles Highway is narrow and crowded. It is a great place for granite vistas….but cautioned driving
is advised.

Thurs. Sept. 27: Free painting Day…Hill City Gallery Walk with Nocturne painting in the evening

1. Panel and surface stamping continues at the Hill City Senior Center at 227 Walnut Ave., across the highway from
the 1880 Train from 8am to 5pm.

2. Beginning Thursday noon, artists may hang any framed work completed during the previous two days of the
event. We will be at the Senior Center until 7pm on Thursday.

3. Each artist is assigned a panel on which to hang his/her paintings.

Hill City Gallery Walk and Nocturnes

1. The Hill City Gallery Walk starts at 5pm and is open to the public.
2. The walk includes the following establishments: Warrior’s Work and Ben West Gallery, Dakota Art & Nature
Gallery, ArtForms Gallery, insideOut Gallery, Jon Crane Gallery and Framing, Jewel of the West, and Stage Stop Leather
& Gifts.
3. Separate nocturne painting surfaces need to be doubled stamped at the Senior Center between 5 & 7 pm.
4. Nocturne painting begins at 7pm downtown Hill City.
5. The Best Nocturne award will be presented at the Artists’ Reception on Friday evening.
6. Artists can paint as late as needed.
7. Nocturne paintings must be submitted by 1pm, Friday, at the Senior Citizens Center.

Friday, Sept. 28: Free Painting Day, the Buffalo Roundup, and Artists’ Reception and Awards!

1. Paintings completed on Friday must be turned in by 1pm to be considered for awards.

2. The Wet Sale will be closed from 1pm to 3pm for the jurying process.

3. Artists’ Reception and Awards is from 5-7:30pm, and is open to all, artists and the general public.

4. Awards will be presented at 6pm.

5. Awards include $500 Best of Show, $100 People’s Choice, Best Nocturne $100.

6. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served.

KEEP IN MIND THAT PAINTINGS ARE DUE AT THE SENIOR CENTER IN HILL CITY BY 1 PM FRIDAY

BUFFALO ROUNDUP INFORMATION

Friday, September 28, 2018 is the day of the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. The Roundup is part of Custer State
Park’s management plan to maintain a healthy balance between the number of bison, based on the condition of the grassland,
and how much food is available. It also allows for some of the buffs to be sorted out of the herd and then sold at an auction in
November.

The viewing area for the roundup is located on the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park. The Wildlife Loop Road begins near
the east end of the State Game Lodge campground and heads south. Parking lots at the north and south viewing areas open at
6:15am. Be prepared to wait in traffic. If you are in the park by 7am, you will have plenty of time to get to the viewing areas.
The roundup does not start until 9:30am. Pancakes, sausages, and beverages are available beginning at 6:15am at both viewing
areas, as well as the necessary facilities. You may want to bring layered clothing, folding chairs, binoculars, snacks, drinks, as
well as your paints.

The buffalo are rounded up and herded into the corral area. Shuttles are available after the Roundup for those who wish to go
down to the corral area.

The Roundup is over by 11:30am, but visitors need to be prepared to stay in the viewing areas until the bison are across the
Loop Road and safely in the corrals. Large traffic jams are common. Time driving from the roundup grounds to Hill City can take
at least 2 hours via US-16E and US-385N, through the town of Custer.

Saturday, Sept. 29: Quick Draw Auction and Sales

1. Panels for the Quick Draw need to be stamped at the Senior Center from 8am-9am.

2. Quick Draw 9:30–11:30 on Main Street in Hill City.

3. Best Quick Draw Award $100 announced at 12 noon at the Senior Center.

4. Auction of Quick Draw pieces begins immediately following the announcement of Quick Draw award winner
at the Senior Center. The auction is open to the public.

5. Proceeds from quick draw will go to the artist and a local charity. The artist is paid 70% and 30% will be given to
a local charity.

6. All Paintings will continue to be available for sale throughout the day on Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at
the Senior Center.

7. Artists need to pick up all unsold pieces by 4:00pm.
